Burnout 3: Takedown
From Burnopedia, the Burnout wiki
Burnout 3: Takedown is the third game in the Burnout series. It was developed by Criterion Games and published by EA (Acclaim was unable to publish since its business went under during production). It was released for PS2 and Xbox. It is notably the first game in the Burnout Series to feature Takedowns and Crashbreakers, in addition to explosions in general. Burnout 3 is arguably the most influential Burnout title, as it introduced actual vehicular violence, as opposed to just dangerous driving in the previous games, as well as higher production values.

[edit] Events
Burnout 3 introduces a large amount of new events to the mix, but does away with Pursuit mode. Instead, it's replaced by Burning Lap, Eliminator and most famously Road Rage. World Tour mode now replaces Championship, with two classes associated to a particular region (except Far East, which only has one class).

[edit] Takedowns
Takedowns were introduced in Burnout 3, and marked a new era in vehicular violence. A Takedown is where you cause a rival to crash via a variety of methods. Here are a few of them:
- Wall Takedown - Slamming a rival so hard into the wall he crashes
- Psyche Out Takedown - Making a rival crash without touching him
- Car Takedown - Slamming a rival into a car so he crashes
- Aftertouch Takedown - Holding the right trigger after a crash and steering your car into your rival's car using the left analogue stick
- Signature Takedown - Slamming a rival into a specific environmental hazard so he crashes. When you collect all Signature Takedowns you will receive the Oval Racer Special.
[edit] Boost
Burnout 3 also does away with the old, use-when-full Boost Meter, and as a result Burnouts and Burnout Chains. Instead, you can now use your boost at any time, and using when it has a sizeable amount in it will cause the camera to fish-eye to give the illusion of even more speed than normal. When you Take down a rival, the Boost Meter will also be extended and filled, to a maximum capacity of 4x the original size. However, if you crash, you lose an earned meter of boost.
You can of course still fill your boost bar by taking risks, such as...
- Near Missing with Traffic
- Driving in the Oncoming Lane
- Drifting
- Tailgating Rivals
- Escaping Crashes
It is also now possible to steal your rivals' boost by...
- Rubbing them
- Slamming them
- Shunting them
- Grinding against them
They can also steal your boost by doing the same things to you.
[edit] Vehicles
Burnout 3 includes many more vehicles than its predecessor, with a grand total of 67 vehicles (11 of which can only be used in Crash mode). These cars are now ranked into classes, such as Compact, Muscle and Sports, and each class is progressively faster than the one before it.

[edit] Locations
General areas in Burnout 3 are split into three general regions: USA, Europe and Far East, and are once again based on real-life locations. For instance, Downtown is based on Chicago and Golden City is based on Hong Kong. Each region also has Point to Point races, allowing the player to pass through multiple tracks. It is of course impossible to go from, for example, a US track to a Far East one.

[edit] Soundtrack
Due to Acclaim falling out business, and Criterion being acquired by EA, Burnout 3 now includes EA Trax, licensed music put into the game. There are over 40 different tracks in the game. Oddly, in Burnout Paradise, there are some non-licensed tracks that originate from Burnout 3. A likely cause for this is that Acclaim fell out of business during production of Burnout 3, and EA pushed Criterion to include EA Trax. However, two tracks managed to make it into the final game, which are Ozone and Bettie's Last Voyage (the Title Music and New Car Music, respectively). These tracks were made by Stephen Root, who did the music for the previous two titles.
