Crashbreaker

From Burnopedia, the Burnout wiki

This article is about the gameplay mechanic. For the game mode in Burnout Revenge, see Crashbreaker Events.

A Crashbreaker is an aid introduced in Burnout 3: Takedown, which grants the player the ability to blow up their vehicle in order to take down others in its explosion radius. It later reappeared in Burnout Legends, Burnout Revenge, and Burnout Dominator, but was cut out of Paradise, because there were no crash events, and because if someone crashed in a Road Rage or Marked Man event, they would fail the event.

[edit] Use in Burnout 3

During a Crash event in Burnout 3, the player would be able to use a Crashbreaker with the R2 button if they accumulated a certain amount of crashed cars. This gave the player the ability to knock cars a bit further, but the Crashbreaker strength was the same with every vehicle.

Along with many other pickups, one could also use Impact Time to move their vehicle into a Crashbreaker pickup, which automatically explodes your vehicle, regardless of how many vehicles you've crashed. This means one can still explode even if they don't have the required amount of cars crashed to use one. It also means that it is possible to blow up twice the entire crash event.

[edit] Use in Burnout Legends

The Crashbreaker reappears in Burnout Legends, performing the same purpose as in Burnout 3.

[edit] Use in Burnout Revenge

Crashbreaker available notification after crashing on Burnout Revenge.
Criterion revamped the use of the Crashbreaker in Burnout Revenge. This time, special Race, Road Rage, Eliminator, and Grand Prix events allowed one to use the Crashbreaker during a race event. If one crashes, they can activate their Crashbreaker by sacrificing all their Boost. This has the ability to take down anybody in its range, and it is possible to be able to cause a Total Payback, where one uses the Crashbreaker to take down every racer. If the player is taken down, they can also immediately explode to get Instant Revenge, but the concequence is that if you detonate your vehicle and don't take down anybody else, you respawn with no boost, and because of the crash, in a worse position.

Crashbreaker also is revamped in the Crash events. For every vehicle crashed, the player is awarded a small amount of boost. Once one reaches 100% boost, the Crashbreaker will activate itself in 5 seconds. During these five seconds, the player can either wait, or they can try to fill the bar to 100%, thereby amping up the strength of the Crashbreaker. Because the bar gets filled up for every crash caused, it is possible for the player to explode more than once, though usually, the player can only blow up twice in a single event.

The Crashbreaker's strength in Revenge was determined by the Crashbreaker Force level of the car, and during a Crash event, the strength was also determined by how filled the boost bar was. The higher the level, with a maximum of level 10, the better the explosion, but the harder it is to charge the gauge

[edit] Use in Burnout Dominator

Same thing as Revenge, but all events (except solo events like Maniac) are now featured Crashbreakers.
