Infobox Width Edit

Hey, I was wondering what we were going to do about the infoboxes... I have a feeling that they are too wide. Do you think this too? Should we consider narrowing them down to 200 or 150? I was thinking that we could also harmonize those templates by line breaking comma-separated phrases (Burnout 3: Takedown for instance).

Also, I have checked The Vault again and they found a nice way to keep the game logos. This page for instance uses javascript to show the full menu...

Tell me what you think about these changes and if you agree I'd be happy to work with you to incorporate them.

Cheers

Yeah, I actually helped a little with that code. TBH, I haven't looked over this site much at all lately. If you're talking about the vehicle infoboxes, then yes, they are probably a tad wide now. With 640px of content space, a 300px infobox if almost 50% of the width. 200px works really good with the new layout for Oasis I have found. The issue there is if we can easily fit all that info in a 200-250px infobox and still make it look good. —Rappy talk Burnopedia Admin • 06:28, February 16, 2011 (UTC)

I'm sure we can shrink our infoboxes down to 200 pixels, unfortunately we'll have to go through all of them to resize the images inside since I think that they are all coded to be 300 pixels... Would a python script do a quicker job?

I think that we'll stick with Oasis, no rolling-back to Monobook... The system is stepping forward and we should too. Embrace the Future! (don't where that's from, nvm). How's the Aion Wiki holding up? ;-)

About the logos, do you think you could incorporate them here? I don't think it would be a long job, especially now that you tell me that you worked on the Vault's code...

Aion wiki is going good. 13k edits later and we've barely scratched the surface on game content >.< Got good interactive hover over though. Example. The issue with dropping the vehicle infoboxes down will be with the variant icons at the bottom. Currently, it's perfect to fit 8 (which I think is the most needed) Dropping the size down will cause that to irregularly wrap around and won't look as neat. Do some tests in a sandbox on Carson GT Concept. If it comes down to it, I can probably be persuaded to write some code to make the variants section wrap properly (IE 4 max on 1 line, 2 max lines... the Hunter Cavalry has 5 variants, so that would be 3 on top, 2 below.)
I am quite busy on Aion wiki and other projects currently so I am not sure how much time I could devote to help with this. Getting the JS code for the icons shouldn't be hard and wouldn't take more than a few hours. So, I could add that in if we're still wanting it here too.
As far as the infoboxes, if you're willing to do the brunt of the work, I can pop in and help with what you'd need help with, but I can't devote the time to work on them myself. —Rappy talk Burnopedia Admin • 22:47, February 16, 2011 (UTC)

Pretty impressive stuff on Aion! I'd love to that here too but I don't think we have a real use for hover-overs...

So what exactly would you have me do on the infoboxes? Size them and their images down to 200? I don't really know how I could make the variant icons wrap around though... It seems that I may have lost my coding skills during my absence!

About the logos, we had them before so we should make them appear now too. What coding could I do to help you out on this?

Cheers

Do your best to get an infobox down to 200-250px regardless of the variations section and we'll go from there. There is a lot of padding around the side headers that could be stripped... The other issue would be the stats lines. They shouldn't wrap around. All 10 with the (10) and image should show correctly on one line... otherwise it looks like crap as seen in the countless DPL listings. If you're able to get the infoboxes down to 250ish that might be good enough and still leave plenty of room for the content. Also, check out w:c:Aion:Old_Scroll if you want to see another of my projects... A javascripted flip book... just like in-game. Also, that page has a few hover-overs for an item and an NPC in the game. I am working on a lot of projects over there and am getting a good handle on jQuery and trying to learn a bit of javascript all at once... o.0 I will try to get working on the icons this weekend. No promises though. I have a lot on my plate at the moment. —Rappy talk Burnopedia Admin • 05:33, February 18, 2011 (UTC)

Rappy,

I'm letting you know that I worked on the infobox and that Carson GT Concept showcases the modifiations. Unfortunately, the initial coder of the infobox (that's you BTW, ;-P) set up the image= input to be the full link (size included) so we would have to edit all the vehicle pages to resize their images to 200 pixels... Python script possible? Anyway, while we figure this out could you sort out the variant icons?

Thanks a bunch mate!

Cheers

It's a nice spot for it! Thanks for sorting it out, however I'm not quite sure how it works. I reloaded the page a few times but I doesn't seem to change... I browsed to another page and another line was appended to the same line as before... :-S

Does it work perfectly for you?
Inserted this message into the main mixdown at 07:35, April 7, 2011 (UTC).

It's a poor implementation for what used to be perfect, but it works. I am guessing the double tag was on MediaWiki:Tagline? If so, that should double tag it. Purging a page won't update it, it seems to work with your 'current session' data. IE, let your session timeout then refresh... you get a new tagline. Ultimately, I'd want it working like it was pre-Oasis and changed every refresh, but I don't think that will be possible with Oasis's limitations. You can read up here is your interested in the conversation and my reasoning for looking for a 'cool' implementation on the idea. —Rappy talk Burnopedia Admin • 20:19, April 7, 2011 (UTC)

Well I must say that I never thought you liked the idea that much, and I'm glad you wish to see it working again (as do I). I read through the forum and despite being technically lost among the JS coding and so on, I really appreciate the effort. BTW about the links, perhaps changing the wiki codes "[[" to the "<a href="">" tags could make them work? A small fix next to the bigger issue, but I guess it's a fix nonetheless...

Please share with me any progress that is made on this matter! ...and good luck!

At the moment, I think I've hit a brick wall with it. I may get another brainstorm on it later, but for what it's worth, it works currently. I just wish it was more random. Anyways, changing to a's might fix that issue. —Rappy talk Burnopedia Admin • 21:06, April 7, 2011 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Common.css Edit

Rappy, I had to remove some code from the Common.css file today: http://burnout.wikia.com/index.php?title=MediaWiki%3ACommon.css&action=historysubmit&diff=69859&oldid=69172 . This will make main page ads appear on the front page again. While I know this considerably detracts from the design of the page you just put in place, obviously blocking ads from appearing violates our Terms of Use and thus that code can not go back in place. Please let me know if you have any questions. --daNASCAT WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog) 19:09, August 2, 2011 (UTC)

Eh, that must have been left over and overlooked from last time. I don't see adds normally, so I never caught it. Thanks Tim. —Rappy talk Burnopedia Admin Rappy 20:44, August 2, 2011 (UTC)

I have a question, are you planning on integrating ads more seamlessly into Wiki designs? You said it yourself and indeed, ads destroy Wiki skins. The extra background ad is a real killer too: these days I'm under the impression that I'm editing on the smurf wiki!

I understand the purpose of ads but you must find a way to limit their eye soring impact!!!
Inserted this message into the main mixdown at 11:08, August 3, 2011 (UTC).

Ceex, I hear you and so does our design team. Yes, we do need ads but we also need wikis to feel happy and unique. Please realize it's a battle behind the scenes as we try different ad presentations to see which ones allow for both parties - ads and readers - to remain content. We've found some good ways to handle it with some of our new formats (footer ads, skin-based ads) but we are still trying to find a way to handle the basic ads you see on article pages. It's a pain point and it's a pain point that has not gone unnoticed. --daNASCAT WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog) 17:43, August 3, 2011 (UTC)

I'm happy to hear that you are aware of the problem and I can only agree with what you have explained. I'm also -on my side- fully aware that this is probably your most difficult challenge.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Rappy, unfortunately the aforementioned issue that brought us to your wiki also alerted some of us to a number of other things that need to be tweaked with our skin to fit inside of our Terms of Use. For more information on what I am about to say, please review here - [1].
The following things are currently violating our Terms of Use:

  • The logo colour - must be back to the default white.
  • The Facebook Like button seems to have disappeared (possibly being hidden by some of your extra features)
  • You seem to have added -40px to the end of the Wikia page. This is pushing down parts of the skin, so it must be removed.
Please fix this within 48 hours or I will remove the elements myself (and, not to sound rude and this would not be intentional, but there's a very good chance since I didn't design this skin, I will accidentally remove other things on the skin). Everything else is a-okay. I know this is not what you want to hear, but the Terms of Use are the Terms of Use and they must be complied with.
I will be happy to answer any questions. --daNASCAT WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog) 20:29, August 9, 2011 (UTC)

It seems as though you know Rappy better than myself but he didn't design the skin, I did. I think you should message me about the wiki design issues directly especially when there are deadlines involved...

Anyway,

  • I changed the logo color back to white but I would really appreciate if you could tell me how I could discuss this with other members of staff.
  • I never touched the Facebook Like button and it appears on all the pages.
  • Wikia Header has been restored.

Sorry for having ignorantly lowered the header. I hope you find the problem for the like button, no (intentional) code here is blocking it and it is displayed on my side.

I did also see ads on the front page... I know there supposed to be on the article pages but I've noticed there randomly appearing on the main page, and its kinda ruining the main page. (I do know that the ads help the site but its rather wierd for them to be on the main page). I'm fairly new though so I'm not really usefull with these kind of things. Dunewolfz 01:18, August 10, 2011 (UTC)

I am also seeing the Like button on all pages. —Rappy talk Burnopedia Admin • 05:20, August 10, 2011 (UTC)
Ceex, I'm sorry, I do remember now that Rappy mentioned a number of months ago you were the go-to guy for this. Thank you for fixing most of these issues. I will be happy to discuss the Wikia logo thing with you further. Ask what you wish. Also, the Facebook like button - I am not seeing it on the Home Page. One of my coworkers had initially told me they didn't see it anywhere, but I believe they were mistaken. But for sure I am not seeing it on the front page.

Okay, it seems that the search bar was hiding the Facebook button on the main page, as well as the talk page link and "create new page" link. I repositioned it so that everything is displayed correctly: fixed.

For the Logo, as you can see the white color doesn't really fit with the orange background, at all. I tried downloading the sprites image but it never came out well after editing anyway. So I was wondering if you could let admins decide what color (from selected presets) the logo would be through an option in the skin designer (or something else). This feature was present with the old monaco skin where admins re-uploaded a PNG image and it replaced itself. Perhaps it wouldn't be such a bad idea to restore this option...

Do you think it's possible? What are your limitations? I think it should be an available option.

The logo - It was discussed a lot precisely because of this colorization issue on wikis that want to do some intriguing things with the top bar. But we decided that since we had indeed let communities get so funky with the top Wikia bar, something that originally been off limits at all, we decided we needed to stick with the white Wikia logo for consistency sake. --daNASCAT WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog) 22:15, August 10, 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, he is. Same masthead name and similar IPs. Extending block on both accounts. Rappy 22:03, April 3, 2012 (UTC)

Congrats Edit

Congrats on the new VSTF status! May the [[rollback]] be with you!, sorry I'm a bit late, I read it off community central.DunewolfzBanner 01:23, April 4, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. =) —Rappy talk Burnopedia Admin • 01:44, April 4, 2012 (UTC)
Wow! You're overpowered in this! =O ORA2 Talk to me Burnopedia Admin - 02:51, April 4, 2012 (UTC)
Sorta. It gives me tools that allows me to find vandalism or spam across all of Wikia rather than just on a single wiki, but I can only use those tools for that reason. It's a nice balance. ;) —Rappy talk Burnopedia Admin • 02:56, April 4, 2012 (UTC)
Exactly what are those tools Rappy? Or are they a secret? DunewolfzBanner 14:39, April 4, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, of course they are sekrit. =) —Rappy talk Burnopedia Admin • 04:30, April 5, 2012 (UTC)

Clan.Edit

Well do any of you guys still get together and play?{{SUBST:Sig/VICE_xRebelion}} 07:26, April 22, 2012 (UTC)

The Clan is dead. A couple of us still freeburn together every now-and-then though. DunewolfzBanner 13:59, April 22, 2012 (UTC)

A couple of questions concerning templates. Edit

Hey, Rappy I've been making a couple of templates for the MotorStorm Wiki and I found that the template you guys use (the one near the title just a little to the right) was much easier than making what I had in mind. I modified yours (hope you don't mind) for my wiki but the template doesn't show up right. It appears as normal images on the article itself. Can you shed a little light on the subject? Here's a link if you want to see what I rambling about: here. DunewolfzBanner 02:59, May 26, 2012 (UTC)

Umm..I think some templates only works in this wiki. Hence it's edges of the tables. ORA2 Talk to me Burnopedia Admin - 06:56, May 26, 2012 (UTC)

Another question Edit

Yet another question from me. Could you give me a little hint on how you make a user's access level appear on Recent changes? I imagine it involves either changing the CSS or JS right? DunewolfzBanner 03:28, June 10, 2012 (UTC)

CSS can be done for that, by user name, of course. You can see all of us coded in MediaWiki:Common.css. Rappy 17:51, June 10, 2012 (UTC)

About Tmi1080 Edit

I've talked to him about the reason you blocked him, I hope he understands now that he can't just make categories carelessly like he has (he did the same a while back on the MS Wiki). By the way, do you mind if I copy you guys' Clan card template and modify it a little bit for the MotorStorm Wiki? DunewolfzBanner 04:57, June 15, 2012 (UTC)

It's not the fact he was creating them. I asked him to explain his rationale on the forums and he didn't then continued to create more. I'm unsure if we need/want them. They seem unnecessary.
As far as the clan card, it's fine with me. I started (but never finished) an auto-coder for it (at Burnout Wiki:Clan card maker). It updates most of the card for previewing, but doesn't yet output the code to make it. If I get the time, I may get back to finishing it. Rappy 05:50, June 15, 2012 (UTC)

(I happened to notice this when I was scrolling down the recent activity.) I did some snooping around and it turns out Tmi1080 has created his own Burnout Revenge wiki here. As for the categories they do not seem needed and to me are mostly based on opinions NOT the game itself.

BTW:Haven't seen you in a while Ceex, Lol.
AveryFairTalk 02:54, June 25, 2012 (UTC).

Hey guys now I learned my lesson but I might be inactive for a while and if any one plays burnout revenge can you help with my wiki and like I said I learned my lesson I understand why I can't make categories carelessly but the reason why I didn't leave a comment on the forum was because I didn't know how to leave a comment on that forum post Tmi1080 03:32, June 26, 2012 (UTC)

You could have responded on the talk pages. Feel free to continue fixing up the categories here if you want. The categories for Revenge and Legends could use a little work. I just don't have the time, but will look into it when I get the chance. —Rappy talk Burnopedia Admin • 04:22, June 26, 2012 (UTC)

For obvious reasons. DunewolfzBanner 12:34, August 31, 2012 (UTC)

Yep. Got it. I've gone ahead and dropped you sysop rights. I simply just don't have the time now to look after this site. Feel free to ping me if you need help with anything though. Rappy @Wikia 13:40, August 31, 2012 (UTC)

Question, Edit

Rappy, how do you go about blocking a range of IP Addresses? I'm having a particular annoyance with this one "92.xx.xx.xx" editor who keeps spamming categories. Also, congrats on becoming part of Wikia staff! (although that was probably a while ago, :|)

DunewolfzBanner 21:06, September 13, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the congrats. :) There's a nice tool to range block. Check it out here. You can copy/paste recent changes into there too and it will pull the IPs out for you. Wikia will not allow more than a /24 block, so it the result shows /27 etc, Wikia will not allow you to add the block. You will have to find a tighter block. You can review what each range represents here as well as getting more in depth information that I didn't mention above. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rappy @Wikia 22:17, September 13, 2012 (UTC)
Ah, that ought to do it. I blocked 92.40.0.0/16, that's okay right, not breaking any rules? Here's a link in case you need it, [2]. DunewolfzBanner 22:51, September 13, 2012 (UTC)
It's not rule based... you just aren't able to add a block that's more than /24. :) And that block looks fine. Rappy @Wikia 01:14, September 14, 2012 (UTC)

Yet Another questionEdit

Hey Rappy, you're good with CSS, right? Could you tell me how one would, for lack of a better word, put an image onto the Wikia Header? I'll try to find an example of what I'm talking about... Hereis what I'm talking about, see those little blue circle/dot/slash things on the Header? How would you do that? I have little experience in CSS, so everything is pretty much new to me. Hopefully you can answer this. Cheers, DunewolfzBanner 18:55, September 15, 2012 (UTC)

Yep, that's added via:
.WikiHeader {
    background-image: url("http://images.wikia.com/tardis/images/c/c8/WikiHeaderFullLength2.png") !important;
    background-repeat: no-repeat !important;
}

Rappy @Wikia 20:14, September 15, 2012 (UTC)
Rappy you're awesome. DunewolfzBanner 20:16, September 15, 2012 (UTC)
I feel somewhat stupid but I've tried everything I know and nothing is happening. I give it 4-6 hours to update (because I know that normally takes a while) but nothing happens. I've copied and pasted it directly as you have it there (changing the image url though of course). Is it possible that there is something else to it? DunewolfzBanner 02:41, September 17, 2012 (UTC)
Got a link? Rappy @Wikia 04:28, September 17, 2012 (UTC)
[3] DunewolfzBanner 13:09, September 17, 2012 (UTC)
I moved it to Wikia.css. That line at the top of Common.css is incorrect. Common.css is not loaded when viewing the Wikia skin unless it's imported. Anything that only changes the way the default skin looks should be placed in Wikia.css. I also imported Common.css into Wikia.css for you so that your admin highlights work in Oasis. Lemme know if you need anything else. Rappy @Wikia 14:28, September 17, 2012 (UTC)

Alright, I will. Thanks a bunch Rappy. I'll be sure to note that. DunewolfzBanner 14:40, September 17, 2012 (UTC)

Another question... Edit

So, in light of upcoming Halloween I've decided to spruce up the MS Wiki a bit. I need your help with something though, how do you float an image above the rest of page? I know about the div style trick but I'm talking about applying the same image to all pages using CSS. Is there any way to do this? DunewolfzBanner 21:46, October 15, 2012 (UTC)

Not with CSS, no. What do you have in mind? I might be able to whip up some JS that would do the trick. Rappy @Wikia 22:43, October 15, 2012 (UTC)
I need to make an image float above the both the background and the page space. I've heard of "stacking", would that be at all related to it? It needs to be fixed too. (10 minutes later...) Here's and example (the balloons). DunewolfzBanner 22:46, October 15, 2012 (UTC)
The problem with doing this is: you don't know how large the viewing area of the user's screen is. Those images can show up fine if the user has the desired width, or horribly if they don't. You are better off with change the background with CSS or through the ThemeDesigner for that one day/week/etc. Rappy @Wikia 23:04, October 15, 2012 (UTC)
Indeed, well is there any way to simply put up a banner at the top of the page that says "Happy Halloween!"? DunewolfzBanner 00:56, October 16, 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately, banners are disallowed unless they are in the article space, which isn't as appealing. I have seen some wikis redesign their entire skin for the holidays. The background idea wouldn't work? You can always place a big banner on the main page. Rappy @Wikia 04:23, October 16, 2012 (UTC)

Section-only protection Edit

Rappy, is it at all possible to protect a section of an article? I don't want to protect the article itself, just one section.

Here's the page, I just want the "Members" section open to editing, the rest of the article I want to be admin-only protected. Thanks, DunewolfzBanner 02:27, October 27, 2012 (UTC)

Sure. Admin protect the page itself. Then move the Members section to a Template. Add a link in that section to the top to "Add your name here" that sends them to an edit of that template. Then transclude the template onto the admin protected page. Rappy @Wikia 17:28, October 29, 2012 (UTC)

Assistance required. Edit

Is there any way at all to make it so that when people go to edit a page they get sent another article (particularly, the rules of a page)? I didn't want to have to do that but this page has become a battleground. In simply terms, I just want it so that when someone hits the edit button, they get sent to a page listing the rules of editing that page, then they get sent to the actual editing page. I don't want to have to lock it, but if there is no other way of preventing war...

DunewolfzBanner 23:54, December 1, 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately, preventing editing this way is not within compliance of the Terms of Use. However, there are a few things you can do that are within.
  1. Admin protect the page itself (so they can't click the edit button).
  2. Move all existing suggestions to a new page (IE: MotorStorm_6_Wishlist/suggestions)
  3. Add a neat little button on the page to "Add your suggestion".
  4. Create a template with the rules for editing that page and admin protect it.
  5. Transclude the new page onto the existing page via {{/suggestions}}
  6. Make the button use that template as an 'editintro'. (You can see how all this is done here)
If you have further questions, feel free to ask. Rappy @Wikia 07:18, December 2, 2012 (UTC)
Took me a little while to understand what you were getting at, but I've got it now. Thanks Rappy. DunewolfzBanner 15:55, December 2, 2012 (UTC)

Rappy, Edit

I've had quite enough of this user and so has everyone else on the Wiki. All they do is spam categories on random pages and reverting them is getting old. I've done the range block more times than I can count. Help me out Rappy, please.

DunewolfzBanner 18:49, December 31, 2012 (UTC)

What's the other IPs they've used? I only see like 8 category additions on that one. Rappy @Wikia 19:07, December 31, 2012 (UTC)
For as long as it has been happening, it's only been from the 188(etc) range. I'd just like to know who to rid the Wiki of this vandal since the range blocks only seem to work half the time at maximum range (/24). The 94. IP Address could be related, but I'm that sure. DunewolfzBanner 19:29, December 31, 2012 (UTC)
Hey, I'm a little busy at the moment. Can you put this on the VSTF wiki for investigation? Please try to list a few IPs for them to look into. You can place that information here. Rappy @Wikia 22:50, December 31, 2012 (UTC)
