Vehicles in Burnout Paradise are unlocked through either progression by winning events towards the player's Licenses or with the purchase of downloadable content packs.
Some updates introduced free vehicles to Burnout Paradise, which are included in Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box, and post-launch downloadable content packs that are paid for, but are included as part of Burnout Paradise Remastered a definitive 10th anniversary re-release.
New vehicle unlocks will be notified to the player by DJ Atomika, with the vehicle first entering Paradise City, and can subsequently be found driving along the streets of the city as long as the player is not in an event nor a Freeburn Online session. That vehicle will have to be taken down by the player, which will count as a Shut Down. The vehicle can then be found in the Junkyard.
The only vehicles that need to be Shut Down to be unlocked are Paradise Cars, but vehicles within that category unlocked by upgrading the Driver's License are made available in the Junkyard as soon as their requirements are met. Vehicles in other categories are unlocked from the beginning or appear in the Junkyard as soon as their unlock requirements are met.
